Sheilaโ€™s Recipe Snapshot for Orange Bars

I’ll take any chance to use fresh ingredients, like delicious orange juice and fragrant orange zest!

Taste and Texture: These orange bars are sweet, tangy, and citrusy, with a buttery, crumbly crust and a smooth, custardy filling that melts in your mouth.

Difficulty: This recipe is fairly easy to make, taking about one hour from start to finish. The most challenging part is allowing the bars to cool completely before cutting, but it’s worth the wait!

Hot Tip: For the cleanest slices and impressive presentation, allow the orange bars to chill in the fridge overnight, making cutting neater and easier.

Swaps: If you want a lemony twist, swap the orange extract for lemon extract or use a mix of orange and grapefruit juice for a unique citrus blend!

Save-Worthy: These bars are versatile enough for any occasion, whether a casual treat, a brunch dessert, or something to bring to a party. If you are a Tennessee fan like me โ€” Go Big Orange! โ€” these are perfect for game day.

That’s right โ€” nothing compares to the vibrant burst of fresh citrus flavor! Thereโ€™s a certain joy in squeezing oranges and tasting the zesty brightness they bring to any recipe. In these orange bars, freshly squeezed juice truly shines, striking the perfect balance between tangy and sweet in every luscious bite.

Fresh orange juice is one of my favorite ingredients to use in recipes that call for a citrus kick. I use it in the cake and citrus rum glaze of my homemade Orange Bundt Cake for a rich and zesty dessert thatโ€™s always a hit.

It even shines in savory dishesโ€”paired with a spritz of lime juice, it brings out the best in my Orange Mustard-Glazed Pork Chops Recipe.

From tailgating at the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!) to cozy afternoons at home, these orange bars prove that fresh citrus can truly brighten any occasion.

More Recipe Success Tips

You can insert a toothpick into the center to ensure the orange bar recipe is set. If the toothpick comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs, you’re good to go!

Try not to overmix the filling ingredients. You want them to be well combined but not overbeaten. This helps you attain the perfect texture!

Chilling the bars overnight will give you the cleanest slices. However, at least 2 hours of refrigeration is enough to make slices easier and cleaner than cutting them fresh from the oven.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can these orange bars be made in advance?

Yes! In fact, this is an excellent recipe to make ahead for parties or as a ready-to-go treat. After slicing, place them back in the fridge to store a few days before serving. If you need to split the recipe prep time, you can prepare the recipe up to baking the assembled bars and store for a couple of days to bake when ready.

Can I use bottled orange juice instead of fresh?

If in a pinch, bottled orange juice will do the trick. However, fresh juice gives the bars a much more vibrant flavor.

How do I prevent the filling from being too runny?

Make sure the eggs and flour are well mixed, and bake until the center is set. If the filling is still too runny, it may need more baking time.

How can I make the bars less sweet?

If preferred, reduce the amount of sugar in the filling to suit your taste, or use a sugar substitute like stevia.
