Sheila’s Recipe Snapshot for Rice Krispies Treats Recipe

These festive Krispy Treats are fun to make, fun to eat, and guaranteed to be the star of your celebration.

Taste and Texture: Soft and chewy with crunchy cereal, sweet marshmallow, and a crisp candy drizzle.

Difficulty: Quick and easy with just a few ingredients. Perfect for kids or last-minute party prep!

Hot Tip: Grease your spatula or hands lightly with butter or oil to keep the sticky cereal mixture from clinging while pressing into the pan.

Swaps: Use different colors for other holidays or swap the drizzle for dipped ends to change up the look.

Save-Worthy: These treats are a crowd-pleasing favorite that add instant color and joy to any celebration—totally worth bookmarking!

These treats are chewy, sweet, and full of nostalgic flavor— but it’s the colorful candy drizzle that makes them pop! They’re perfect for patriotic holidays, birthday parties, bake sales, or anytime you want a dessert that looks festive but is easy to make.

Since they’re made in one pot and don’t require an oven, they’re also a great recipe to make with kids. You can prep the base ahead of time and let everyone help with decorating for a fun hands-on activity!

Ingredient Notes for Krispy Treats

  • Unsalted Butter | Adds richness and keeps the marshmallow mixture smooth.
  • Mini Marshmallows | Melt into the base of the treat. Use fresh ones for the best texture!
  • Rice Krispies Cereal | Classic puffed rice gives these treats the perfect crunch.
  • Red, White, and Blue Candy Melts | For colorful drizzles or dipping! Candy melts are perfect because they melt smoothly and set firm.
  • Assorted sprinkles | Star-shaped or patriotic colors add the perfect finishing touch.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Use different colors. Switch the color scheme for other holidays (orange and black for Halloween, green and red for Christmas).
  • Dip instead of drizzle. Dip one side of each bar in melted candy instead of piping for a different look.
  • Make them mini. Cut smaller pieces and stick them on lollipop sticks for Krispy Treat pops.
  • Add mix-ins. Stir in mini M&Ms, white chocolate chips, or crushed pretzels for extra texture.

How to Make Rice Krispies Treats Recipe

This patriotic Krispy Treats recipe is so easy to make, you don’t even need an oven—just a pot, a spoon, and a little red, white, and blue flair!

MELT THE MARSHMALLOWS. Melt the butter in a large pot over low heat. Add the mini marshmallows, stirring until completely melted and the mixture is smooth.

DECORATE. Drizzle each Krispy Treat with the red, white, and blue melted candy and place on a sheet of parchment paper. While the candy coating is still wet, decorate with sprinkles.

SET & ENJOY. Allow the treats to set completely at room temperature, or in the refrigerator for a faster setting.

More Recipe Success Tips

Use fresh marshmallows. Old or stale marshmallows don’t melt as smoothly and can make the treats dry. Fresh marshmallows give you that perfect gooey texture that makes these patriotic krispy treats extra delicious.

Line your pan with parchment paper. This makes it easy to lift the whole slab out of the pan for clean slicing and decorating.

Press the mixture firmly and evenly. Use a spatula or wax paper to press the cereal mixture into the pan without gaps or air pockets!

Cool completely before decorating! Chilling the treats helps them set so they don’t fall apart when cutting or adding the candy drizzle.

Work quickly with candy melts! Melt one color at a time and drizzle right away. Candy melts harden fast once off the heat, so work relatively fast if you can!

Storage Tips

Store any leftover patriotic Krispy Treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If it’s warm or humid, refrigerate to keep the candy coating firm. I don’t recommend freezing them, as the texture won’t be the same once they are thawed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular marshmallows instead of mini?

Yes! Just measure by weight—10 ounces of regular marshmallows will work the same as minis.

Can I use food coloring and white chocolate instead of candy melts?

It’s better to use candy melts or oil-based coloring, as regular food dye can cause melted chocolate or white chips to seize.

How do I melt the candy melts?

Melt each color in the microwave in 20–30 second bursts, stirring in between, or follow the package instructions for stovetop melting.
